This report analyses the transport sector of Peshawar. It explores the transport infrastructure, activity, and externalities.
Peshawar is severely underserved with road and public transport infrastructure. Peshawar has about 10.6kms of rapid transit infrastructure per million urban population. At similar population density levels, Jakarta has 23kms, Singapore has 33kms, Moscow has 34kms, and Chengdu has 57kms. And, only 6% of the urban population has access to this rapid transport system. Registered number of motorcycle and scooter are steeply increasing in the Peshawar district (13% annually between 2015 and 2018). This indicates a high dependence on private transport modes.
Consequently, Peshawar ranks higher compared to many of its peer Pakistani urban centers in terms of transport CO2 and PM2.5 emissions per capita. An external research indicates that by 2030, the transport GHG emissions are projected to account for about 59% of the total in Peshawar.
Recent policy documents highlight measures in terms of improving the transport scenario and include measures in the domains of transport demand management, public and active transport improvement, and infrastructure expansion and maintenance among others.
